Denmark withdraws as host of 2021 Europeans in TeamGym due to COVID-19

The Danish Gymnastics Federation (GymDanmark) has withdrawn as the host of next year’s European Championships due to the economic and health related impact of the COVID-19 pandemic.

TeamGym is a fast-paced, exciting and explosive sport, but looking into even the most positive of scenarios of how to host a major sports event during a pandemic under the possible restrictions imposed by the Danish government, it will be a Europeans without any of the celebratory festivities a sport like TeamGym deserves.

Chairman of the Danish Gymnastics Federation and president of the European Championships in TeamGym 2021, Anders Jacobsen, elaborates on the difficult decision:

“We have been looking very much forward to hosting the biggest and best Europeans in TeamGym thus far and give European fans and gymnasts a fantastic experience in Denmark. But the more we know and the further we get in the planning, it becomes very clear that hosting an event during the pandemic will be a very costly affaire, and the result would, even in the best case scenario, most likely not be worth the cost and effort,”

Even the number of expected gymnasts to participate in Ballerup outnumbers the amount of people allowed to gather at sports events in Denmark during the current restrictions.

Furthermore, training facilities across Europe are closing again and some gymnasts are still looking into a period with no proper training, which is essential to perform at the highest level needed at the forthcoming championships. Most European countries are not even allowed into Denmark at the moment, and what would a European Championships be without one key component; European fans and gymnasts?

Lastly, the health and safety of participants, volunteers, spectators and all others involved in an event of this size, is the top priority. Therefore, the decision might be difficult but nonetheless necessary.

Denmark hosted the championships back in 2012 with great success and all partners had hoped to top that in 2020/2021.

”We had looked forward to once again welcoming the European Teamgym Championships to Denmark. In 2012, the event was a genuine spectator hit and should have been next year too. But we are faced with too many challenges due to the COVID-19 situation and we therefor support the decision of the Danish Gymnastics Federation to withdraw as a host,” says Lars Lundov, CEO, Sport Event Denmark.
